What is a SCART lead?

A SCART lead is most commonly used to connect a piece of video equipment to a TV set. On the back of most TV sets, there is a SCART socket:

Into this, you plug a SCART lead, the other end of which you connect to a piece of equipment such as a Freeview box, DVD player, or digital recorder.

A SCART plug is a rectangular plug with 21 holes.
