Missing Freeview TV Guide infomation

Posted on 21 April 2012 By TV and Tech 118 Comments on Missing Freeview TV Guide infomation

On-screen TV Listings Now Working

Freeview EPGWe’ve had a couple of messages from Freeview users not getting their TV listings information over Freeview:

“On our TV Guide we can get all channels but no synopsis detailing programme on some, what do we do?” (Wendy Sivyer)

“Please can you tell me why I cannot get my tv guide on my ALBA digital recorder? If I cannot get the guide I cannot record. Is there a way around it?” (Sandra Sparkle)

Why the Guide isn’t working

The TV listings information is used to populate the EPG (Electronic Programme Guide) and the information comes in over-the-air as data with the Freeview channels.

If you’re not getting the TV guide information, it may mean that your Freeview receiver isn’t getting a signal from the service that transmits the programme information.

What to do

One of the first things to try, is rebooting the Freeview box – Disconnect the mains power for 30 seconds and reconnect the power. Leave it a while for the box to get the information

It’s also worth performing a “re-tune” – From the box on-screen menu, perform a channel scan to make sure that all of the Freeview channels are stored in the receiver correctly.

Note that the programme information can take a while to be received, so allow 10 minutes before checking to see if the programme listing data is coming in.

If you’re still getting no luck, some other thoughts:

  • Are you getting all of the Freeview channels?
  • Are you getting a good signal?
  • Are other Freeview receivers in your house having the same problem, or is it just one box?
  • Has anything changes that may have caused the problem?

Still having a problem? Add a comment below, including the make and model of receiver, and your postcode (to check Freeview coverage)

We have lost most of our channels. We have. Followed instructions on retuning, turning the BTvision box off and trying retune again all to no avail. It hasn’t recorded anything today either. There has been a signal message saying weak or no signal. We can still watch previously reorded programmes and TV on demand etc. can you help?

You need to go into set up menu. Then the change your box settings menu. Then change your tv guide menu and pick the 8 day freeview + option. I had this in my wharfdale box and it fixed it. I also had a problem before that where the channels were all over the place and not in the usual order ie bbc1.bbc2. Itv1 etc this was solved by just doing a new scan for new channels again. Hope this has helped someone.

My TVonics MDR 252 box shows no information against 50% of the channels. Retuning cures for a day as turning mains on and off does. However guide deteriates over time .Changed freeviewbox but still the same problem.

From mid August 2012 we are all suffering frequent lock ups with the 3View PVR
It seems the EPG is causing the problems which were not there prior to 22 August 2012.
Sadly 3View is no more so we are on our own.
    Any suggestions please?

It is changes to the “SI Data” that is causing the above problem.
Any suggestions as to what was changed in mid August to make a previously working PVR a non working PVR would be appreciated .
We all have the same problem.

Not a lot happening here but I’ll post anyway.
Had a reply from the BBC today…………

Quote:””Thanks for contacting the BBC regarding your Freeview reception.
I forwarded your correspondence to our engineers who have asked that I pass on the following:
“These changes would be in line with the D Book, with all manufacturers aware of these changes.
Normally a software download by the manufacturer would resolve these issues, but as 3View is no longer trading this will be difficult to achieve.
However, further news is available at: http://www.3viewpvr.info/pages/news.htm
It might also be useful to talk to your retailer with regard to this problem.”
(Please note we are not responsible for the content of any non-BBC websites.)
I hope this information helps to clarify the situation and I’m grateful to you for taking the time to raise your concerns with us and I’d like to assure you that we value your feedback highly.

          Hi Jane,

The Thomson box got it’s programme guide information from a service called Top Up TV. They are no longer on business, and no longer sending out programme guide information.

That is why the box is no longer getting programme information.

Hope that helps to explain things.

Hiya – I have the same problem as Lucy…and the same model freeview box. Do you know if someone is taking over from Topup TV to update the TV guide or does this mean we have to buy a new box?? I assume I can’t record anything if there’s no TV guide or is there a way round it? I’ve got loads on this box that I haven’t watched yet – I hope I don’t lose it all! And could do without the expense of getting a new one – grrrr!! Thanks!

I am having trouble with the EPG on my Freeview PVR. I set it for a series record for Coronation Street. Most times it records the second episode and not the first one. On some occasions I have checked the timer and it shows the next episode to be about a week in advance. I then have to erase and re enter the timer from the EPG, and this normally corrects it. Today I only got the second episode and tried to enter the timer for the omnibus edition on ITV2. The EPG entry for this program was missing, and after giving it ten minutes to load up the guide I abandoned it as it made no difference. If I set individual timers per episode, the timer entry sometimes disappears, hence the use of the series record. Digital TV and EPG recording should in theory make life easier. It is no good having digital quality pictures if you can’t get your programme to record.
Bring back the old analogue video recorders. I didn’t miss an episode once.

I am only able to get the current day Freeview EPG listings on my new Sony KDL-40W705C and they are sometimes patchy. I have performed a factory & retune, also a power reset, no difference.
My Panasonic HD recorder gets all the EPG information well. I am wondering if the fault lies with the tv, aerial or transmission.

I bought a Sony KDL40W-705c 4 months ago as my main tv and also have a KDL32W (bought 2 years ago.) The EPG is fine on the 32W. However, it has suddenly vanished from the 40W. I have tried everything from restore factory settings, retune auto and manual. Leaving on standby all night. It is sending me mad. Most of the apps that were originally there on the first set-up have also vanished, including I Player You Tube and others (Thank God for the BBC Red Button). Wish I hadn’t bought this new Sony now. Somethings changed.Any suggestions

All my programme guide lists is the radio – no TV so can’t record. The TV set (from the same socket) lists the full TV programmes so it’s obviously a problem with the PVR.

Look for a setting within your programme guide called ‘Filter’, or something similar. This allows you to display TV, radio or text channels only within the guide. Ensure this is set to ‘All’.

I have a Bush NTU250DTR, has worked without problems for 5 years – then in December (2016) it did an update unprompted by me (first time that’s ever happened) and since then the EPG has disappeared. I can still watch all channels fine, and can pause live TV, but I can’t record anything as that requires the tv Guide to be populated. I’ve tried doing a reboot, I’ve tried retuning, but nothing gets the EPG back. Anyone know of a cure???

We have TiVo and we use the Guide daily. My husband is 80 and has no knowledge of how to remedy the problem as he doesn’t use electronics with the exception of the remote and that’s only for changing the Channels.

This lack of a response from Freesat is unacceptable. I’ve been watching ‘Freesat’ for ten or more years without any problem with the EPG. I use a computer with a satellite card in it via Microsoft Media Centrer and it has always worked perfectly – until recently. I also have a TV terrestrial card (for normal ariel) in it, so that I can watch either and record off the other, the EPG on that still works perfectly.

SOMETHING HAS BEEN CHANGED. WHY CAN’T WE GET A STRAIGHT ANSWER ABOUT WHAT IT IS AND HOW TO FIX IT? THEY HAVE NO RIGHT TO BRAG ABOUT WHAT A WONDERFUL FREE SERVICE THIS IS UNTIL THEY ADDRESS THIS ISSUE.

For those suffering incomplete / missing program guide data, I’ve been told that there has been a recent change in either the structure of the guide and / or in how the guide is transmitted as part of the Freeview signal and that this may be the cause of such problems (especially in older equipment). It’s unclear at the moment whether this problem is fixable. On my TV all I’m getting is the current & next program on every channel.

I switched on my Panasonic PVR this morning and went through the retune process in response to the message ‘New programmes available’ and then selected the EPG, provided by Freeview. This came up OK but with various channel logos overprinted on it in white, each about threequarters of the screen height, making the guide completely unreadable. It changes when you select each channel.

    Nothing improved it.
Panasonic says Freeview have changed the transmission of Guide.
I contacted Freeview they say Panasonic are incorrect and transmission of guide remains the same.
Freeview says they are only getting reports that only Panasonic TVs are having the issue.
Panasonic told me that some Panasonic TV`s between 2010 1nd 2013 may be affected.

What’s happening with Panasonic freeview EPG. It is terrible. MY Panasonic TV doesn’t show any programs after an hour past current transmission. On my Panasonic Recorder I cannot pre-set to record programs as they are missing. If you wait a long time parts of a channel start to slowly build. It was never like this before.

Im having the exact same problem with my Panasonic GT30B, bought brand new in 2012.

I also have a 2007 Sony 32S2010, a 2010 Sony 40ex503, and a similar age TVonics PVR which all decode the EPG data correct and fully populate the EPG for the next 7 days.

Been in touch with Panasonic and this is the reply –

    Thank you for your e-mail.

In regards to your query I would kindly inform you that the EPG data has increased over the years and the built in tuner of the television is not capable to decode all the information that it is receiving at once.

Regretably, this is a hardware limitation, due to the age of the unit and there aren’t any other troubleshooting steps.

I trust that the above information will be of assistance to you. However, of course, if you should have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Since last week for several channels on my 2012 Panasonic TX-P50G20BA plasma tv in London I see “No programme information available!” when pressing the info button and scrolling through the channels.

Pressing ‘Guide’ I can see some further information being populated before my eyes and one can scroll through the guide to retrieve more. That information then also appears from the info button however is not retained for long.

Just sharing as a partial but far from great workaround in case that works for others.

I have four Panasonic TV’s all about same age 7 to 10 years. Three work fine. The youngest does not populate it’s EPG. Feeling let down by Panasonic. Very disappointed.

These issues are now getting worse.
I have gone through all the system resets on my Panasonic LED TV with Freeview inbuilt.

Has anyone gained info regarding their Freeview signal strength???

    COME ON PANASONIC.

Try checking your firmware – my TV reckoned its firmware version was upto date when it checked, however there was a later version shown on Panasonic website, I downloaded and installed that from an SD card – all now ok.
