Manually Adding Channels to BT Vision

Changing Transmitter for BT Vision?

Question submitted online by Gareth

I’m trying to find out how to change what transmitter I receive my Freeview signal from on my BTVision box.

No problem with my signal, it’s a problem with channel list. I receive 19 channels on my current transmitter (Cathcart) but I would receive a lot more channels from the Black Hill transmitter which is still in range. The guy at digitaluk gave me a transmitter number but didn’t know how to configure a BTVision box

Our Answer

There’s no way of manually entering a UHF channel number on the BT Vision box. The BT Vision box is designed to scan the TV band and find the strongest signals, and then assign the channels based on what’s detected during a scan.

If you find that you’d prefer to get your signals from a different transmitter, then it’s not the Vision box you need to look at, it’s your TV aerial.

If you want to get signals from a different transmitter, the normal thing to do is adjust your rooftop TV aerial so that it points in the direction of the transmitter you want.

Aerials are very directional, and if your TV aerial is pointing at a specific TV transmitter, then it will generally ignore signals from other transmitters that are not in the direction that the aerial is pointing.

If you’re not comfortable moving your TV aerial, contact a CAI-approved TV aerial installation company and ask them to quote for the job. It’s often a good idea to get a second quote before proceeding.

How to rescan for channels on BT Vision

Should you need to perform a channel rescan on your BT Vision box

  • Press the BT Vision button the remote control
  • Use the right arrow to scroll to “Settings”
  • Select “TV settings”
  • Select “Add channels to TV Guide”
  • When prompted, select Continue

The box should then scan for channels, adding any new channels that it finds.

The box isn’t getting enough signal – there are a number of things you can do, including using a booster, improving your cables and connectors, or making improvements to your aerial. You also have to be in a good Freeview reception area
