BT Vision Multiroom

Posted on 4 May 2011 By TV and Tech No Comments on BT Vision Multiroom

Question

I love my BT Vision, but how can I get BT Vision multi-room? I want to be able to watch BT Vision in other rooms in my house.

Our Answer

Unfortunately, BT doesn’t offer a BT Vision Multi-room solution, and you can’t have two BT Vision boxes running on the same Broadband line.

Why is this?

The BT Vision solution combines live TV from Freeview, with on-demand content over Broadband. Each BT Vision V+ box relies on a connection to the BT Vision back-end server, and it seems that BT’s back-end can’t talk to two BT Boxes on the same phone line.

So, what are my options?

We have three options for you – none of them are ideal, but they’re still options:

Option 1: You can send the output of your BT Vision box wirelessly to a second TV set, using a wireless AV Sender. Maplin stock a range of Wireless Senders – we’d recommend you look for a 5.8GHz sender as they’re generally better than the older, cheaper 2.4GHz models – Wireless AV Senders at Maplin. The down-side here is that you can’t one one BT Vision channel in one room and a different channel in the other room.

Option 2: For the second room – get a Freeview box. This will give you almost all of the live channels that you get on BT Vision. You’ll need to connect the Freeview box to a suitable TV aerial feed. OK, you can’t watch BT Vision’s On Demand service, but your live TV is sorted and you can watch a different channel in each room. A Freeview box only costs £20 from the likes of Tesco, Currys or Comet.

Option 3: Get a second BT Line. Obviously an expensive option, but with two lines, you can have one BT Vision box for each line.

It’s a shame that BT Vision don’t yet offer a true multi-room service, but this may be something that changes in the future.
